We are in the peak season for deck repairs. If your deck is falling down around you it is because of one omission. Failure to properly treat the wood with a quality wood preserver on a scheduled basis. Yes, I said quality.
There are many “wood preserver/waterproofing” agents on the market. Many promise quality that they cannot deliver. Among the failures in my 17 years of following these are Behr, Thompson’s water seal, some grades of Cabot and all the other low-end companies in the game for a quick buck.
A quality wood and water proof stain has to be chemically tested for UV protection. The sun is the major contributor to discoloration/degeneration of your outside wood structures. Water rot is the second. This occurs when water is allowed to penetrate the porous parts of the lumber and not evaporate properly.
The answer to a quality semi transparent/transparent stain is Penofin or Super Deck, in my opinion. These products have real oils that penetrate the wood and seals from the inside out. And, for an added bonus – provide UV protection at it’s finest.
The answer to a solid color DECK STAIN is Rubbol/Sikkens. This product provides UV protection as well as a penetrating stain that will preserve your structure. A color match to the body or trim color of your home can be attained.
The reason you do not want to paint with a latex your deck or porch railings is simple: Think of latex as a plastic glove. Now, think of your entire painted deck or porch railings as a water trap wrapped with a rubber glove. As water creeps in it cannot evaporate in a timely manner, thus rot begins. Ten years later on a new deck, you’re calling me for a repair.
